It is so easy to forget the needs of little children. Their needs are different to ours as adults. They are little and not as strong. They need to learn and build their skills. I thoughtfully arranged our kitchen so that I could use it comfortably. I have realized for a while that it's not meeting Wolf's need for independence. I have finally taken some time to make it work for him. The major changes I needed to make were to the pantry and the fridge. I've rearranged the pantry drawers so that cereal, toast supplies and snacks are low down and easy for him to see and reach. Milk and water are now on the lowest shelf in the fridge. Wolf can reach the fruit and veg, yogurts, cheese and butter. The plates, bowls, cutlery and measuring cups are already in draws he can reach and the microwave is under the bench. It's usually my frustration that prompts me to make a change like this. It frustrated me that everyday Wolf would ask "what are the options?" for breakfast. Now he can see them. I would find it tedious to gather the ingredients and follow the procedure. Wolf is enthusiastic about developing his executive functioning and problem solving abilities. His arms and hands are getting stronger and more coordinated. It annoyed me to wait 90 seconds for the porridge to cook. Wolf is fascinated by watching his porridge boil and bubble through the microwave door. Now I feel so proud of him and he feels proud of himself. Porridge must taste better when you make it yourself. He went back and made himself a second bowl.
